Dance Classes

Our Studios offer group classes in all levels, from beginner to professional, and in all styles of ballroom dancing. For beginners, the Basic Social classes teach a different dance each week. Students will quickly learn the basic steps in the most popular rhythms that are played at weddings and social functions. These lessons can be supplemented by more advanced classes in the American Social style or the more rigorous International style-Intensive courses that devote several weeks on a single dance are also offered in both American and International styles of dancing. There are classes to meet the needs of just about anybody: from the beginning social dancer, to advanced competitors... smooth dances, Latin dances, swing or disco. There is no need to bring a partner to any of our classes.

Weekend Parties

Since 1984 the our Studio has run Weekend Ballroom Dance Parties on Saturday nights. These parties are open to the public as well as the school's students. Our parties attract dancers from all of the New England states. The generously sized dance floor (4,000 square feet) offers ample space for the dancers to strut their stuff! Our professional sound system plays finest recorded big band music. All types of dance rhythms are played throughout the evening: swings, waltzes, rumbas, foxtrots, tangos, cha chas, mambos, quicksteps, merengues, Viennese waltzes, sambas, disco, etc. For a break, stroll into our Living Room for refreshments and lively conversation with fellow dancers. Often, our parties feature amateur or professional demonstrations. Every party has at least one Paul Jones dance, where everybody is encouraged to take part in a medley of partner exchanging, to help people meet one another. Our parties are informal, with a dress code best described as smart casual. Occasionally, formal parties are held at other venues, offering a change of pace and atmosphere.

Private Lessons

Students wishing to progress more quickly or reach a higher level of dancing proficiency may want the individually tailored instruction that private lessons provide. These lessons are available by appointment for singles and couples, or a group of your friends. Private lessons are offered seven days a week at studios in Newton, Brookline, Needham and Southborough, Massachusetts. Students are never required to purchase contracts. There is no sales pressure. Our emphasis is on a fun approach to learning, at your own pace.

Professional Training

Professional dancers wishing to receive their teaching certification can undertake intensive training in preparation for taking their Professional Examinations.

 Medal Tests

These exams are given annually, and allow students' dancing to be scrutinized by an outside examiner of one of the leading dance societies. Written comments and numerical grades are assigned, and successful applicants are awarded a certificate and a medal signifying that the student has achieved proficiency at the Bronze, Silver, Gold or Gold Star level. These tests can be taken by individuals dancing with their instructor, or by couples.

 Competitions & Showcases

To some people, ballroom dancing is a hobby or serves as a social outlet. Others thrive on the thrills and excitement of competitive dancing, known as dance sport. Competitions are a fun way to measure your progress, chase after fame and glory, and meet other interesting people who love to dance. Contestants compete either as couples or individually with their teachers. For those who don't want to compete, but still wish to show off what they have learned, we offer showcases several times a year. Here students perform, usually in costume, to an audience of fellow students and other dancers. The participants are not judged, and instead of a trophy, the reward is enthusiastic applause.
